Lemon Spaghetti – an easy pasta recipe

Tet Grajo – another amateur cook in her own right (and someone who is a LOT better than me if I might add) – just lent me her copy of Everyday Italian by Giada de Laurentiis. The first recipe under the chapter on pasta was lemon spaghetti. I’ve never heard of this dish before so it was very interesting to me. It sure helped that it was absolutely easy. Even someone who has never cooked a day in his life could figure this one out.
The star of the dish is a simple lemon juice-infused oil-based sauce.
Kevin is Top Chef!

For some reason, my favorites never really end up winning in Top Chef. It’s been seven seasons already and my bets have always either eliminated in the middle of the competition or dramatically come up short in the final judge’s table.
Season 7 started off with two very strong personalities – Angelo Sosa and Kenny Gilbert were literally dominating the storyline of the show until Kenny eventually got booted out for failing to lead his team to a win in the “restaurant wars” episode. Sosa would get to the final three but would end up losing to Kevin Sbraga. Read more
Traveling to improve your culinary knowledge

Sorry for the hiatus. I went traveling and I found it hard to update this blog while I was on the road. Aside from continuously cooking to improve one’s technique, traveling also helps because it exposes one to different dishes and cuisines. The Philippines may be a small country but one just has to travel one hour to Pampanga to realize how fast the language and the cooking style changes.
I traveled to the Cordilleras over the past weekend and I must say, I really love the food up there.
Lamb chops and potatoes

I’m very happy with how this plate of food turned out. It was my first time to cook lamb so I was very apprehensive with my approach to treating the product. Fritz has earlier warned me about the perils of under cooking lamb so I was very determined to cook it very well done just to ensure that the lamb wouldn’t have an unsavory smell. The sauce is a red wine reduction.
I didn’t want to mess this one up because lamb is relatively expensive.
Turkey Ham and a nicely poached egg

Reality cooking show judges always emphasize that poaching an egg perfectly requires technique and finesse. As you could imagine, this brings me great joy and pride as I can turn out very nicely poached eggs at a fair consistent rate. This was breakfast for today – two slices of turkey ham and a poached egg. Turkey is relatively more healthy than pork or beef due to its significant lower fat content. Read more
